Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.

The Ancient Sanskrit

Look to this day
for it is life
the very life of life.

In its brief course lie all
the realities and truths of existence
the joy of growth
the splendor of action
the glory of power.

For yesterday is but a memory
And tomorrow is only a vision.
But today well lived
makes every yesterday a memory
of happiness
and every tomorrow a vision of hope.

Look well, therefore, to this day....

Ships are safe in harbour but that's not what they were made for.

Go out on a limb, that's where the fruit is.

One morning after a big storm a young man was walking along a beach, there were literally thousands of starfish washed up high on the beach and as the sun came up they were going to dry out and die. As he walked he was bending to pick up star fish, one by one and throwing them back into the sea. A passer by said to him, there are many, many starfish, you will never make a difference. The young man, bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea and replied, there you are, I made a big difference to that one.

The log pile - a small action can make a big difference. If you have ever walked through forestry commission woodland you may have seen piles of cut logs waiting to be shipped to saw mills. There is usually a sign beside the pile warning you not to climb on them. The reason is that a small movement to just one log at the bottom of the pile can cause the whole pile to collapse and change shape. I see that the same applies to any situation. The smallest action can have a huge impact. This effect is often called the butterfly effect, based on the claim that the flap of a butterfly's wings can lead to a hurricane on the other side of the world. The smart bit is being able to spot the small action that you need to take to have a massive positive impact, or the small action that you need to avoid as it will lead to a massive negative impact. If ever anyone says to me, there is nothing I can do to make a difference, I reflect on the Log Pile.

It is better to light a candle than complain about the darkness.

No battle plan survives contact with the enemy.
